Sony Pictures Classics just released eight character posters for Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”.

The film features Heath Ledger’s final performance, along with his stand-ins to complete the movie: Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. The rest of the cast consists of Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Lily Cole and even an appearance by famous little person Verne Troyer.

Set in the present-day, movie is a fantastical morality tale. It tells the story of Dr. Parnassus and his extraordinary Imaginarium, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus opens to theatres on December 25th.

The specialty studio picked up the rights for a bargain price after no one wanted to get involved with it after a lackluster Cannes Film Festival premiere.

Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick.

The trailer itself looks spectacular, and with just over a week to go until release it won’t be long before we all get to see the finished product.

Coming Soon also reports that the film will open in the UK on October 16, and will also screen at the Toronto Film Festival on September 18. In other Parnassus news, the film Canadian distributor, E1 Entertainment, has declared a review embargo until the film’s opening day, set for September 10th.

Terry Gilliam’s masterpiece became infamous even before production wrapped for being Heath Ledger’s last film. Sadly Ledger died in January last year, halfway through production and with many scenes left incomplete, Gilliam made the tough decision to keep going without his leading man, and it was soon announced that Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law would all step in to help complete Ledger’s final film.

Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, Lily Cole, Andrew Garfield and Verne Troyer are among the cast ensemble.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is yet to get its U.S. release date, but is expected to come out in 2009.
