From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure “Alice in Wonderland”, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.
The trailer was officially revealed as the result of a Facebook competition: users had to take sides with either the Red or White Queen, or the Hatter. The Hatter won. This teaser, which is reportedly slightly different from the Comic Con version, re-introduces the Mad Hatter character portrayed by Johnny Depp and gives a look at the other characters, including Mia Wasikowska’s Alice and Stephen Fry’s the Cheshire Cat.
As for Disney’s presentation of the movie at San Diego Comic Con 2009, the panel held on Thursday, July 23, was made merry with a surprise appearance by Depp after the screening of the film’s custom-made trailer. Introduced by director Tim Burton, the actor walked onstage in a button-up shirt and fitted black vest. However, he said nothing but, “Hey. Happy to be here.”
Contrary to Depp who only made a short appearance, Burton was present to answer questions and explain about the 3-D movie. On the occasion, he noted that though the movie is based on the book by Lewis Carroll, many elements of the material have been updated. He also revealed, “We don’t use every character, but we tried to make all the material new while being true to it as well.”
When asked about the hardest part of making the movie, the director responded, “Being here when it’s not done – I have this sort of white-rabbit-with-a-ticking-clock where I need to be doing it.” He then elaborated his answer, “Just combining all the weird elements, I’d say this is the most difficult one so far.”
Mia Wasikowska stars as Alice, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Matt Lucas, Michael Sheen and Crispin Glover join them in the cast ensemble.
“Alice in Wonderland” expected to come out in Disney Digital 3-D on March 5, 2010.
