First Trailer for Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It!”

After some stills now here’s the full trailer for Drew Barrymore’s Whip It!, starring Ellen Page.

The plot, as previously reported, sees Page as spunky heroine Bliss Cavendar, who tires of entering her mother’s beauty pageants and gets into roller derbies instead (an American contact sport kind of like Rollerball, but with rollerskates instead of the motorbikes and chainsaws).

Whip It! is an adaptation film based on Shauna Cross’ novel “Derby Girl”. Beside Ellen Page, it also stars Drew Barrymore as Smashley Simpson, Kristen Wiig as Maggie Mayhem, Juliette Lewis as the villain Iron Maven and Marcia Gay Harden as Bliss’ disapproving mother as well as Jimmy Fallon as a cheesy hungover announcer called Hot Tub Johnny.

Groomed for local beauty pageants by ambitious and haughty mother, Bliss has no clue where her life is going. But, that’s all is about to change. One day, she discovers an underworld roller derby league. Impressed by what she is seeing, the misfit 17-year-old girl then tries out to join a team named the Hurl Scouts under the name of Babe Ruthless and finds her true self along the way.

I’m not sure if it’s just because Ellen Page is in it, or if it’s because they’re using clever alternative music in the trailer, or if it’s because Ellen’s parents in the film seem like an exactly clone of the ones in her Diablo Cody movie, but Whip It seems an awful lot like Juno on rollerskates. Except of course, this time Juno’s not pregnant. At least I hope she isn’t. Rollerderby seems like a spectacularly bad place to be when you have a baby in your belly.

Directed by Barrymore, Whip It! will roll its way into U.S. theaters October 9.
